Janka and Bob in Germany, 1946 .
The Best of Times
Before you finish reading the letter I thought that one more little story about Janka might be fitting. Janka spoke with an accent. In fact, if you have ever heard Zsa Zsa or Eva Gabor talk, then you would have an idea of what Janka’s accent and use of the English language were like. Some of her friends and co-workers liked to kid her about her accent. They would ask her what time she worked to. The answer, of course, was six o’clock. But, she would say “sex” o’clock, and of course everybody would laugh!
There were many times when life seemed to be good and fun loving for Janka. We moved to Moorestown in 1961 and made new friends, most of which were in our class. In 1963, Oscar and I started high school. This was the mid-1960’s. Janka and Bob and the parents of our friends would get together for a monthly covered dish party. There were the Geidel’s, Betzendahl’s, Bridge’s, Page’s, Speace’s, Fricke’s and Freudenberg’s. Life was good. It was the middle of the summer, and the Page’s were hosting the party.
The Page’s lived behind our house and had a swimming pool. Oscar and I were hanging at our house along with some of our friends whose parents were also at the “pool” party. After the party had been going on for a while, we snuck over and peeked through the fence and to our shock, all our parents where in the pool skinny-dipping!
Later in the evening Janka came home to get something and see how we were doing. We noticed that her hair was wet, so we asked her if she went swimming and Janka said that she had. And we said, “But you didn’t take your bathing suit with you to the party!” We all had a good laugh catching our parents skinny-dipping.
